Initial Contact Letter On An Audit – CP 566

Initial Contact Letter – Your Official IRS CP 566 Notice…

CP 566 is the initial contact letter for an audit. In many cases, people do not receive the CP 566 letter and an audit takes place without prior notification. Then you get a CP 2000 and you have to defend it. When you receive the initial contact letter beforehand, you will be able to prepare for the audit that will take place.

Audits can take place at the IRS auditors office or at the taxpayer’s place of business. It is usually preferable to have it take place at the auditor’s, or your representative CPA’s office. This way they will not be looking around asking questions about what they see. When you receive the CP 566 letter, the initial contact letter, it is important for you to prepare for the audit. Irrespective of whether you will be going to the office of the IRS or the whether the revenue agent will visit your or your CPA’s office, you need to be very prepared.

Please see my section on IRS Audits to get a feel for what to expect. Or call us at 713-774-4467 and we will explain the benefits of hiring us to represent you in an audit. After the date to conduct the audit is set up, and you need additional time to prepare for the audit, a new date can be requested of the auditor. They usually accept. They are usually under time pressure and don’t want to waste time if you are not ready. Some auditors may want to start anyway, so don’t wait to the last minute to have your representative call.
